Descendants of Philipp Jacob Kroener
Generation
One
1.
Philipp Jacob1 KROENER was born 8 July 1814 in
Wilferdingen, Baden,
Germany. Parish
records show that
Kroener have lived in Wilferdingen since the 1600’s.
Philipp married Barbara SCHLAMM, daughter of
Johannes SCHLAMM and Barbara
ZACHMANN, 28 April 1836 in
Wilferdingen. After
Barbara’s death he
married Augustina FRANZ 16 April 1846 in
Wilferdingen.
Philipp Jacob and his family emigrated to the United
States on the ship
‘Woodside,’ departing from Le Havre (France) and arriving in New York
City 2
September 1852. In
the pre-Civil War
period many Germans from southwest Germany began crossing the Alsace to
Paris,
then going down the Seine River to the port of Le Havre, which was
bringing
cotton from New Orleans to supply the cloth-making industry in Alsace. Since the cotton ships
returned to New
Orleans practically empty, transportation for passengers could be offered at low rates. Some of the ships heading
back to New
Orleans stopped at New York or other ports, and this was perhaps the
situation
for the ship ‘Woodside.’ Philipp's
listing on the passenger register was P. Kroener, age 38, farmer. Also with him, were: A.,
age 28, female
[Augustina, Philipp’s wife]; J., age 16, male, farmer [Jacob Philipp,
son of
Barbara]; G., age 13, male, farmer [George Adam, son of Barbara]; W.,
age 9,
male [John, or Johann William, son of Barbara]; D., age 7, male [David
Ernst,
son of Barbara]; C., age 4, male [Christian, son of Augustina]; and H.,
age 2,
male [Heinrich, son of Augustina].
The
family spent its first winter in America in Auglaize County, Ohio, then
in the
spring of 1853 went to Marion County, where Philipp Jacob cultivated a
rented
farm for nine years. He made a declaration to become a citizen in the
Clinton
County, Indiana, Circuit Court more than two years before actually
becoming
naturalized on 19 September 1860 in Bowling Green Township, Marion
County,
Ohio. Why he was in
Clinton County in
1858 is not known.
In 1862, Philipp purchased a tract of land in Bowling
Green Township,
Marion County, and continued to reside there until his death of typhoid
13
September 1878 at age 64. He
was buried
in the German Reformed Church Cemetery, Big Island Township, Marion
County,
Ohio.
Philipp Jacob’s name appeared with different spellings on
different
documents. On an
1865 land deed his
name was 'Philip Jacob Kraner.' A
two-line obituary from 1878 has 'Jacob Philip Kraner,' however his
tombstone is
inscribed 'Philip Jacob Kraner.' A
signature on a land deed appears to have the last name spelled Kronner
or
Kroener. (The
German spelling of the
name is Kroener. Kraner
became the
Americanized spelling.)
Philipp’s brother
may have been
Augustus Kraner, born about 1818/19 in Wilferdingen, Baden, Germany,
who
resided in Marion County, Ohio, by 1848.
His occupation was a tanner and currier.
(Philip's son George Adam became a tanner.) An Augustus Kraner was
named guardian of
Philip's sons John William and David E. in 1863.
Philip Jacob was still living and it is not known why a
guardian
was named. When Augustus died 8 September 1891, he left a wife and two
daughters.
Philipp Jacob’s first wife Barbara was born 11 September
1815 in
Wilferdingen, Baden, Germany. She
died
15 August 1845 in Wilferdingen at the age of 29.
A reference to her in a biographical profile of her son
John
William gives her last name as Slim, which was probably an Americanized
spelling. His second wife Augustina was born circa 1820 in Ispringen,
Baden, Germany.
