     123.  John Clarence4 VANCE (James3, James2Vance, Robert1) was born 25 December 1859 in Logan County , Ohio.  He died at age 83 on 3 July 1943 at the home of his son Curtis Vance in Butler Township, Montgomery County, Ohio. The cause of death was arterioscleratic heart disease with cardiac failure. He was buried 5 July 1943 in Forest Hill Cemetery, Piqua, Miami County, Ohio, next to his two wives Emaline and Nettie.  Nettie has a simple marker, but there are no markers on the graves of John and Emaline.

John first married Emaline JULIAN 30 November 1880 in Springhills, Champaign County, Ohio. John was 21 years of age and Emaline 19. Emaline was divorced earlier in the day from her husband Samuel S. Chapman whom she married 2 November 1876 in Champaign County.  The court found that Samuel “had been found guilty of willful absence from the plaintiff for more than three years prior to the filing of the petition” and the divorce was granted.  Samuel was ordered to pay Emaline $400 and court costs, and Emaline’s maiden name was restored.  The 2 December 1880 edition of the Urbana Daily Citizen and Gazette newspaper contained an interesting item regarding the divorce and marriage.  “Tuesday, Emaline Julian was granted a divorce from her husband.  About the same time John C. Vance obtained a license to marry the same Emaline.  Emaline was evidently shrewd – giving up one man only when she was sure of another.”  No mention was made of Emaline’s abandonment by her first husband!

Emaline Julian was born in January 1861 in Ohio.  She supposedly had a twin sister Caroline who married John J. Flowers 8 November 1876 in Champaign County, and was found in the 1880 federal census in Perry Township, Shelby County, Ohio with her husband and their one-year-old son Albert L. John Flowers apparently died between 1885 and 1900 and Carolyn, or Carrie as she was also known, married Luther Clouse in 1900. In the census for that year she was enumerated with Luther, born February 1851, a paper hanger, in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio, with son Albert L. Flowers, born July 1878, and son Samuel G. Flowers, born May 1885. Carrie is shown to have had six children, with just two still living.

On 7 January 1887 John's and Emaline’s house together with their household goods were destroyed by fire.  The loss was placed at $500, and the family had no insurance.  According to the 11 January 1887 edition of the Urbana Daily Citizen, "Mr. Vance is a poor man and not able to sustain the loss.  His neighbors placed a paper in circulation to raise money and assist him.  At last accounts there were one hundred dollars subscribed."

Emaline died at age 32 on 9 October 1893 in Miami County, Ohio.  The cause of death is not known.   She was buried 11 October in Forest Hill Cemetery, Piqua, Miami County, Ohio. After her death, on 12 June 1894, her daughters Mellie Grace, Bessie Florence, Learna Ellen, and Mary Elizabeth Caroline were placed in the Miami County Children’s Home.

John Clarence Vance married second Nettie F. FULLER 30 June 1895 in Miami County, Ohio.  John was 35 years of age and Nettie 21. Nettie was born May 1874 in Shelby County, Ohio. Her father John Henry Fuller, a farm laborer and drayman, was born 22 November 1846 in Houston, Shelby County, Ohio, the son of John and Sarah (Williams) Fuller.  He died 16 May 1920 in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio age 73.  Nettie’s mother Margaret Elizabeth Weddle was born 28 March 1849 in Frederick County, Maryland, and died 1 April 1920 in Springfield, Clark County age 71.  Margaret and her parents, James and Mahala (Gilbert) Weddle, and siblings came to Ohio around 1858, eventually settling in Shelby County.  John Henry and Margaret married 2 October 1873 in Miami County, Ohio and had five children in addition to Nettie: William A. (1878-1917), Hudson (1880-1902), Charles (1884 -  ), Mary Ann (1888-1903) and Emma M.(1890-  ).

John and Nettie were in West Virginia at least by March 1898 and until at least February 1900 when daughter Elsie Jane was born there. The family story is that he worked in a mattress factory.  However, by June of 1900 they had returned to Piqua and were living on Covington Avenue when the census was enumerated. John was listed as an engineer.

Nettie died in August 1906 in Piqua, Miami County, Ohio – like Emaline at age 32 -- and was buried 14 August 1906 in Forest Hill Cemetery in that city.  Her cause of death is not known.

John Clarence was not found in the 1910 federal census for Ohio, but his minor children were dispersed around Miami County.  Curtis, age 14, was living with his half-sister Bessie Cook and family in Union Township; Elsie Jane, age 10, was in Piqua with her grandparents Henry and Maggie Fuller, and Edna, age 9, and James Henry, age 11, were enumerated with the John Lehman family. John Clarence Vance also was not found in the 1920 federal census.

John moved in with his son Curtis Vance and his family on their rented farm on Furnas Road, near Frederick, in Butler Township, Montgomery County, Ohio, some time before the 1930 census and remained there until his death in 1943.

Known children of John Clarence4 VANCE and Emaline JULIAN, all born in Springhills, Champaign County, Ohio, were as follows:

+          192           i.     Estella Mae5 VANCE, born 17 June 1881; married Estie Clyde PEARSON.

193          ii.     Mellie Grace VANCE was born 1 August 1882 in Springhills, Champaign County, Ohio. After her mother died in October 1893 she was placed along with her sisters Learna, Bessie and Mary in the Miami County Children’s Home 12 June 1894. Mellie was released 14 March 1898 at age 15 and transferred to her father in West Virginia where he lived for a short time with his second wife Nettie. By 1900 Mellie was back in Ohio, a servant in the household of David Wilkins in Harrison Township, Champaign County. Mellie married first William H. PEARSON 27 September 1901 in Miami County. He was born 12 September 1869 in Miami County, the son of Eli and Eliza O. (Macy) Pearson. The couple divorced and 1 August 1903 in Montgomery County, Ohio Mellie married second Grant H. CRAIG. He was born 22 September 1873 in Rising Sun, Ohio County, Indiana, the son of William and Rebecca (Sloan) Craig and brother of Frank Sloan Craign who married Mellie's sister Learna Ellen (see #195 below). The couple was enumerated in the 1910 federal census in Troy, Miami County, Ohio living on Race Street. Grant was a laborer in a cemetery and Mellie was shown to have had one child, now deceased. In the 1911-1912 Piqua and Troy Directory, Grant and Mellie were listed at 22 North Mulberry Street in Troy. The couple likely divorced before 1920 and it was from East Cleveland, Cuyahog County, Ohio on 11 August 1921 that Mellie wrote to her father a postcard picturing her son Norman on a kiddie car. In the card she said that she was going to Ellen’s [sister Learna Ellen who lived in Perrysburg, Wood County, Ohio] on 20 August and then to Detroit, Michigan for at least a year. Mellie’s name was frequently incorrectly written as ‘Nellie’ and thus she may be the Nellie Craig, age 38, widow and unemployed saleswoman, lodging in the home of William J. Miller in East Cleveland in the 1920 federal census. (Her son, however, was not enumerated with her, so this as easily may not be her.) In November 1923 Mellie, as Nellie, appeared in her half-sister Edna’s obituary with her residence given as Deshler, Henry County, Ohio. She cannot be located in the 1930 federal census but appeared on the 1940 census in Maumee, Lucas County, Ohio. In July 1943at the time of her father's death she was a resident of Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio and by 1949 resided on Bushnell Avenue in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. Mellie died 19 February 1950 in St. Elizabeth Hospital in Dayton at age 67 of pulmonary thrombosis resulting from a hernia operation and partial bowel obstruction. Her death certificate, in which her name appeared as Mellie Grace Craig, stated that she was a widow and the informant was Norman Curtis, relationship unknown. Mellie was buried 22 February 1950 in Forest Hill Cemetery, Piqua, Miami County, Ohio.

+          194        iii.     Bessie Florence VANCE, born 3 November 1883; married Christian Adam COOK.

195         iv.     Learna Ellen VANCE was born 23 December 1888 in Springhills, Champaign County, Ohio and died of a cerebral hemorrhage 10 November 1949 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio at age 60.  She was buried 14 November 1949 in Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery.and Mausoleum in Sylvania, Lucas County. After the death of her mother in October 1893 Ellen was placed along with her sisters Mellie, Bessie and Mary in the Miami County Children’s Home 12 June 1894. She was released 18 March 1897 at age 8. In the 1900 federal census Learna and sister Mary were enumerated in the home of Joseph Franklin Hill Darnell in Clinton Township, Shelby County, Ohio. Circa 1907 Ellen, as she was commonly called, married Frank Sloan CRAIG, the son of William and Rebecca (Sloan) Craig and brother of Grant Craig who married Ellen's sister Mellie Grace (see #193 above). Frank was born 6 February 1880 in Switzerland County, Indiana. Ellen and Frank, a farm laborer, were enumerated in Concord Township, Miami County, Ohio in the 1910 federal census, and by 1920 were living on First Street in Perrysburg, Wood County, Ohio. They moved to Toledo in 1923. Their children were Adeline M., born circa 1909 who was still unmarried in 1949; William F., born 31 May 1911 and died 30 September 1987 in Toledo at age 76; Della G., born 25 May 1915 and died 14 September 1986 in Amherst Township, Lorain County, Ohio at age 71, who married first Francis D. HENKE and second Albert MORI; Irene B., born 14 July 1919 and died 13 February 2008 in Florida at age 88, who married Earl LeRoy CUNNINGHAM; Donald; and Robert.  Frank supposedly died in Toledo 6 January 1966 at age 85. He and Ellen may have been separated or divorced although her marital status on her death certificate was given as married.

196          v.     Mary Elizabeth Caroline VANCE was born 31 July 1891 in Piqua, Miami County, Ohio. After her mother died in October 1893 she was placed along with her sisters Mellie, Learna and Bessie in the Miami County Children’s Home 12 June 1894. Mary was released 6 February 1896 at age four to Joseph Franklin Hill Darnell and his wife Savilla. In the 1900 federal census she and her sister Learna Ellen were incorrectly enumerated at daughters of the couple in Clinton Township, Shelby County, Ohio. Mary was enumerated in the 1910 federal census as a servant in the Darnell household in Bartlow Township, Henry County, Ohio. With Mary was her son William G. Vance, the surname indicating that he was born out of wedlock 8 February 1909 in Henry County. Next door to the Darnells was Orastus Fredrick and his wife Mary, the grandparents of Mary’s future husband Orastus J. FREDRICK whom she married 29 June 1910. Orastus was born 15 November 1891 in Deshler, Henry County and was the son of James L. and Ida A. (Brown) Fredrick. The couple had children Florence Irine Rozella born 25 April 1911 and died 13 June 1911 in Henry County; Ledora May, born 28 May 1912 and died 21 February 1985 at age 72 in Perrysburg, Wood County, Ohio, who married  Frederick A. THOMPSON 4 June 1928 in Bowling Green, Wood County and had children Ethel J., Frederick A., Jr., James, Thelma and Carol; Beatrice Marie, born 26 December 1914 and died of measles 27 April 1915 in Henry County; Clarence Virgil, born 13 June 1916 and died 17 February 2001 at age 84 in Toledo; and Pauline June, born 20 June 1918 and died 15 March 1985 at age 66 in Sylvania, Lucas County, Ohio, who married Carl Marvin WILSON and had sons Michael, Marvin and Byron. Mary and Orastus divorced between 1921 and 1925, probably in Wood County, Ohio, and she married second William Elmer DODDS 30 December 1926 in Lucas County. Elmer, as he was known, was born 16 February 1894 in Benton Township, Osage County, Missouri, the son of William J. and Susan E. (Stephens) Dodds. He was married previously 16 October 1918 in Lucas County to Bertha E. Hillard and in the 1920 federal census they were in Toledo where Elmer worked as an auto mechanic. Mary died 15 July 1951 in Toledo at age 59 during an operation for a hernia. The cause of death was intestinal obstruction and pulmonary embolism due to obesity.  She was buried 19 July 1951 in Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery and Mausoleum. Elmer, who married a third time, died 20 September 1973 in Toledo at age 79 and was buried in Hockman Cemetery, McClure, Henry County, Ohio. William G. Vance, Mary’s son, married Virginia WALTERS, the daughter of Virgil Charles and Dorothy (Sharp) Walters, and was a dockhand for Great Lakes Terminal Warehouse for 22 years, retiring in 1970. He died 9 December 1982 in Toledo at age 73, and was buried 13 December 1982 in Forest Cemetery in Toledo.

Known children of John Clarence4 VANCE and Nettie F. FULLER were as follows:

+          197           i.     Curtis5 VANCE, born 22 September 1896 in Piqua, Miami County, Ohio; married Lyda PENNY.
