Descendants of Thomas Gilbert

Generation One

     1.  Thomas1 GILBERT very likely was born in Maryland, but the exact location and date of his birth are not known. He received his first land patent by 1752. It was not unusual for a person to live on the land seven or more years prior to the land being patented, however it is not known if such was the case with Thomas. At the time of his death 27 June 1794 his property, which was situated “four miles above Middletown” in Frederick County, Maryland and designated “Gilbert’s Inheritance Enlarged” at the chancery sale, included 147 acres for production of small grain, a one-half acre cemetery, four to seven acres of good meadow, 10 acres of timber and apple and peach orchards, a house, wash house, smoke house and barn.

Thomas married first Elizabeth [--?--] of which little is known except that she was the mother of his four children and died some time before 1779 in Frederick County.  He married second Hannah BURTON 13 February 1779.  After Thomas’ death she married second Henry Darby 21 May 1799.

During the Revolutionary War Thomas was a member of the Committee of Observation for Frederick County, Maryland, a group which convened 24 January 1775 and exercised all functions of government until the formation of the state government in 1777. Through this service any of Thomas' descendants are eligible for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution or the Sons of the American Revolution.

Thomas was a member of the Brethren (Dunkards) by at least 1790 when he was witness to the last will and testament of John Arnold and was described by the Frederick County court as “being one of the people called Dunkers…” [sic] Thomas himself left a will signed and witnessed 27 July 1793 and filed 29 December 1794. In it he left his wife Hannah “One Negro Girl named Alce (she being all the Negros I now have)” as well as one-third of his moveable estate after appraisal, a house and portion of land and all crops, fruits and profits coming from his tenant. Thomas’ son Jeremiah received the parcel of land on which he was currently living. The will further stated that upon Hannah’s death the land on which she lived should be sold and all Thomas’ children and grandchildren then living were to receive an equal part. Hannah died 26 October 1822 and in December 1823 the residue of Thomas’ estate was distributed among 28 surviving children and grandchildren.

At some point after leaving her husband, Elizabeth married [--?--] RIGGS.  On 8 April 1802 Elizabeth received from Jeremiah Gilbert, administrator of the estate of Thomas Gilbert, 6 pounds, 6 shillings from the estate, but she died before the distribution of the 1/28th part of the residue of the estate in December 1823.

The couple had no children. Rebecca married third [--?--] LECHLITER before 1823. The spelling of his name has many variations, among which are Lechlider, Lechleider, Lickliter and Licklighter.  In January of 1823 the couple resided in Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland. They had no known children.

On 4 March 1799 Rebecca received from Jeremiah Gilbert, administrator of the estate of her father Thomas Gilbert, the sum of 30 (?) being her portion of his estate. In December 1923 she received $69.04, 1/28th part of the residue of her father’s estate.

Known children of Rebecca2 GILBERT and Jacob RHODES were as follows:

15      ii.    Elizabeth RHODES was born circa 1776. She married Henry STARTZMAN 24 July 1797 in Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland. He was born 2 January 1771 in Maryland. A court record exists in an Annapolis, Maryland archive requesting the administration papers for the estate of Abraham Rhoads, deceased in 1830, filed by Zipporah Gilbert and her son Isaac. There is also a record granting this request. Zipporah was the wife of Jeremiah Gilbert, Abraham’s uncle. In January 1823 Abraham was known to reside in Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio. In December of that year he received $69.04, 1/28th part of the residue of the estate of his grandfather Thomas Gilbert.

     5.  Jeremiah2 GILBERT (Thomas1) was born circa 1757 in Maryland. He married first Magdalena WEAVER 9 May 1779 in Frederick County, Maryland. She died 23 April 1792, apparently in childbirth. Jeremiah then married Zipporah POWELL 27 August 1793 in Frederick County. Zipporah, or Zippe as she was known, was born circa 1775 and was thought to be the daughter of Caleb Powell. She died between 1840 and 1850 in Frederick County.

Jeremiah had 23 children by his two wives. He received in his father’s will a large farm, mostly woodland. Family tradition has it that Jeremiah wasn't a very good farmer and instead of clearing the land as his father Thomas had urged him to do, he did carpentry work in the area. Obviously, he struggled to make a living for his family, whether by farming or carpentry, for in early 1804 he was confined for a period of time in the Frederick County jail for debts which he was unable to pay. He was forced to sell land to settle with his creditors. Jeremiah died around 1822 in Frederick County without a will. The Administrator's Bond was granted to his widow, Zippe, on 3 February 1823 and the inventory of the estate was submitted by her on 10 February 1824. The final accounting of the estate and distribution of the balance to various individuals was made 18 October 1824. Zippe received as the widow’s third the sum of $18.29.  Although deceased, for some reason Jeremiah was listed in December 1823 as one of the persons receiving $69.04, 1/28th of the residue of the estate of his father Thomas Gilbert.

Known children of Jeremiah2 GILBERT and Magdalena WEAVER, all born in Frederick County, Maryland, were as follows:

He was born 29 March 1783 in Frederick County and baptized 22 June 1788 in Christ Reformed Church, Middletown, Frederick County. Catherine and John likely had children, but their identities are not known. Catherine died before 16 February 1814 as it was on that date John married second Elizabeth Graver in Maryland. In 1826 he purchased land in Madison Township, Richland County, Ohio and moved his family there. He and Elizabeth likely had children Alfred, born in 1829, and Elizabeth, born circa 1835. His wife Elizabeth died some time before 1850 and Frederick, as he was also known, married Mary S. Conn (spelling may be Kahn) 2 January 1851 in Richland County. She was born circa 1805 in Maryland and died 15 November 1873 in Richland County, Ohio.      Reuben married 19 March 1818 in Baltimore, Maryland Maria NORRIS. The couple and two sons moved to Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio in 1821. It was in the Miami River in Dayton that Reuben drowned about 1830. His body was never recovered. If so, then she was the niece of Henry Ludy who married Hannah Gilbert (see #22 above)

Shortly after their marriage William and Magdalen moved to Montgomery County, Ohio where they remained until about 1840 when they settled in Bernadotte Township, Fulton County, Illinois with their family. By 1860 they resided in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas and finally in the 1870 federal census can be found in Buchanan Township, Sullivan County, Missouri.

Based on the 1840 federal census for Frederick County, her father may have been Christian Harshman (born circa 1770-1780), but was more likely Jacob Harshman and her mother Elizabeth Kline/Klein/Cline. If indeed the latter, then she probably had a brother Christian Harshman who married Rhoda Gilbert, Isaac's sister, as well as a brother Jacob in whose home in 1850 in Middletown, Frederick County, Maryland resided Julia A. LOWRY, second wife of Mary's husband Isaac who he married 11 April 1851 in Frederick County after Mary’s death in 1850.
