Descendants of Ralph Hunt

Generation One

     1.  Ralph1 HUNT's parentage is unknown, but he was probably descended from Ralph Hunt, born in England, who first appeared on Long Island, New York in 1652. Sons Edward, Ralph, John, Samuel and daughter Mary were identified in his will of January 1676. (The Ralph Hunt of this report also had children Edward, Ralph, John, Samuel and Mary.) Most of Ralph Hunt of Long Island's children and grandchildren were pioneer settlers of Maidenhead (Lawrence) and Hopewell Townships in New Jersey in the years around 1700, and it was in New Jersey that Ralph Hunt of this report was born circa 1738. He married circa 1763 in New Jersey Rachel CAMPBELL who was born circa 1743, probably in New Jersey. Circa 1765 Ralph, Rachel and family moved to York County, Pennsylvania, and then about 1772 the Hunt family moved on to South Carolina and settled on 113 acres on Padgetts Creek, a branch of the Tyger River in Union County. Through the years Ralph purchased additional acreage. Ralph and his wife Rachel were Quakers and were members of the Bush River Monthly Meeting established in 1770 in Newberry County, South Carolina. Meetings for worship which were mentioned as reporting to Bush River MM included Tyger River and Padgetts Creek.

Rachel died 18 March 1790 and Ralph married second Mary COOK 3 January 1793 in Union County. Ralph died in 1800 in Union County. A deed dated 21 October 1805 mentions his wife Mary by saying that 50 acres of land on the southwest side of Tyger River in Union County, South Carolina, purchased on that date by Andrew Kelly (married to Rachel Hunt; see #6 below) was granted to George Little in 1774 and then conveyed by him to Mary Cook, now called Mary Hunt, in 1787. Mary purchased from the administrators and legatees of her deceased husband Ralph the 100 acre tract of land on which she was living on Padgetts Creek. The land, purchased for $300 on 26 March 1804, was originally granted to Jacob Hoyle in 1754 and then conveyed by him to Roger Padgett, and then by his widow to Ralph Hunt. On 5 November 1804 Mary sold this acreage to Davie Pruett, Sr., for $450. Witnesses to the transaction were John Hunt, Jane Hunt (John's wife, see #4), and Mastin Pruett. Shortly after this transaction, Mary moved to Warren County, Ohio where some of her husband's children had located. She married Joseph Cloud there 7 June 1810. Joseph was an influential traveling Quaker minister who encouraged Friends in South Carolina and Georgia to leave the south and move to the Northwest Territory. He was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania 1 March 1743, the son of Mordecai and Abigail (Johnson) Cloud. After the death of his second wife, he and his family settled in Waynesville, Warren County in 1805 and he became a minister in the newly-established Miami Monthly Meeting. Mary (Cook) Hunt was his fourth wife. Joseph died 24 July 1916 at age 73, and is believed buried in the Old Quaker Graveyard near Waynesville. Mary, who was born circa 1749 in Chester County, Pennsylvania, died 4 October 1824 in Warren County, and is likely also buried in the Old Quaker Graveyard.

The Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy states that about 1802, moved by a desire to live in a country where no slaves were held, Friends of Bush River Monthly Meeting in South Carolina began a migration to Kentucky and Ohio. Between 1802 and 1807 more than 100 certificates of removal were issued, most of them for families. This so depleted membership that Bush River MM was all but abandoned by 1808. Ralph's and Rachel's children and their families joined the migration, with several settling in Warren County, Ohio, and later in Randolph and Wayne Counties in Indiana. Others moved to Ohio and Daviess Counties in Kentucky, as well as Spencer County, Indiana. A daughter and her family made Darke County, Ohio their home.
